Stay Safe During Dangerous Heat Days in Baltimore

Baltimore CONNECT is working closely with city agencies to help residents stay safe during Code Red Extreme Heat Alerts. When temperatures soar and the heat index exceeds 100°F, it's important to take extra precautions to avoid heat-related illness, especially for seniors, individuals with medical conditions, and those without air conditioning.

What is a Code Red Extreme Heat Alert?

A Code Red Extreme Heat Alert is issued by the Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) when extreme temperatures pose a serious threat to public health. During these alerts, the city opens Cooling Centers across Baltimore to offer air-conditioned spaces and water to residents in need.

Cooling Center Locations

Cooling Centers are typically open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM during Code Red days. Locations include designated Senior Centers that offer:

  • Air conditioning

  • Cold drinking water

  • Free Wi-Fi

  • Safe indoor space

Know the Signs of Heat Illness

Extreme heat can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Symptoms include:

  • Dizziness or confusion

  • Rapid heartbeat

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Muscle cramps

  • Heavy sweating or flushed skin

🛑 If someone shows these symptoms, call 911 immediately.
